Vigil for the Victims of ICE
Since the beginning of 2025, there have been 40 confirmed deaths at the hands of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in detention facilities and in the streets. Some will try to frame all of these people as criminals, but according to internal data from the Department of Homeland Security, only 47% of the now 73,000 ICE detainees have criminal charges or convictions in their history. No details of the severity of these crimes is given.
This event honours the memories of those who have lost their lives at the hands of ICE officers. It also serves as an opportunity for us to come together and talk about the values we hold as a community. How do we dismantle systems that oppress some and reward others? How do we connect those who are struggling to the resources they need to live a peaceful and happy life? How do we stand up to hate of all types?
If you are feeling upset and angry about the violence you see happening in the states, come out to this event. Change does not come from social media posts, it happens when people come together and work towards shared causes. Let’s talk about building the kind of community that we want to live in, one where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and loved.
